Similar sizes do not end your cleaning options
Weed seeds close in size to your harvested grain can still present a cleaning opportunity. Screens use a size difference; airflow can remove lighter unwanted seeds when they respond differently to moving air. The goal is to take weed seeds out while keeping useful grain—not simply produce a clean-looking handful.
Match the method to the difference
A usable size difference favors screening. If unwanted seeds are sufficiently smaller or larger than the grain for a screen to separate them, size gives the cleaner something to work with. Metra’s VDSC screens by size.
Overlapping sizes leave another possibility: airflow. Lighter weed seeds can move differently in air than the grain you want to keep. In its guidance on cleaning harvested intercropped grain, NDSU’s Northern Great Plains intercropping guide explains that air helps remove lighter weed seed and foreign material. Metra ADS cleaners use aerodynamic separation—separation by response to moving air—and divide material into separate outputs, called fractions. They can separate lighter unwanted material without relying on a screen-size difference.
The reverse matters, too: a visible size difference does not guarantee removal by air. Metra’s operating experience shows that ADS can pass size-different material that is similar in weight to the grain. When that material is difficult to remove by air alone, VDSC screening followed by ADS is an option, not a required setup for every lot.
Let the actual lot show what leaves—and what stays
Compare the incoming material with the retained grain and removed fractions. Keep the comparison focused on three observations:
– Weed seeds in the removed material show what the cleaning method is taking out.
– Weed seeds still with the retained grain show what the current separation leaves behind.
– Useful kernels among the removed weed seeds show that grain is leaving with the unwanted material.
A cleaner retained sample is encouraging, but it does not tell the whole story. You want weed removal and retention of useful grain together. This visual comparison helps identify the remaining cleaning job; it does not measure a recovery percentage.
